School Attendance Matters

Regular attendance at secondary school is one of the most powerful investments a young person can make in their own future.

Students who attend school consistently and complete Year 12 or an equivalent qualification enjoy better health outcomes, stronger employment prospects, and higher incomes across their lives.

During the VCE years in particular, showing up every day builds not just knowledge but confidence, routine, and resilience — qualities that serve students well beyond the classroom.

The VCE is structured so that Units 3 and 4 in each study are designed to be taken as a sequence, with satisfactory completion based on the successful demonstration of outcomes, meaning that students who attend consistently are best placed to build on each lesson and meet those outcomes with confidence.

Research reinforces what many students discover for themselves: that strong attendance creates momentum. Data from approximately 420,000 Western Australian students tracked over five years found that the effects of attendance — positive or negative — accumulate over time, which means that every day a student shows up is an investment that compounds, just like interest in a savings account.

The long-term life benefits of high attendance are genuinely remarkable. Research published in the British Educational Research Journal (2024) found clear links between strong school attendance and better labour market outcomes in adulthood, including higher earnings and lower risk of unemployment.

Students who attend regularly also tend to develop stronger social connections, a greater sense of belonging, and better mental wellbeing — all of which contribute to a fulfilling and successful adult life.

For parents who want to support their child's attendance, there are several practical and proactive steps that make a real difference. Regularly checking your child's attendance through Compass is a great starting point — it gives parents real-time visibility over absences so that any patterns can be identified and addressed early.

When an absence does occur, following up promptly with a note or explanation through Compass ensures the school has accurate records and that nothing slips through the cracks.

If absences are becoming more frequent, reaching out to your child's home group teacher, year level coordinator, or school wellbeing team as soon as possible is key.

Wantirna College have dedicated support staff whose role is to work with families to remove barriers to attendance and get students back on track. Open, non-judgmental conversations at home about what school is like day-to-day can also reveal concerns before they escalate.

The research is clear: when parents stay engaged, communicate openly with the school, and treat attendance as a shared priority, students are far more likely to thrive — not just in VCE, but in everything that follows.

Congratulations to the 20 top homegroups for their outstanding average attendance in the first half of this year.
