A common misconception with the subject Media is that it is all about films, when in fact, Media is so much more than that. It’s all encompassing. From Film to Photography, Print (graphic novels, comics, magazines and zines) to Video games, the subject of Media is rich in opportunity and creativity for students to explore an outlet that resonates with them.
One media form that I have seen grow and become quite popular with students from Years 9&10, all the way through VCE is Zines!
For those unfamiliar with the Zine, think of a Magazine x D.I.Y scrapbook. Zines are often created independently and typically devoted to a specialised niche or unconventional subject matter.
Zines are a great media form for students to work in, particular for those who like working with their hands whilst exercising creativity. It’s been great to see such a diverse array of Zines created across all Media year levels so far this semester as part of the various summative and assessed coursework.

Year 11’s have had a whirlwind start to the year, completing three outcomes already (Representation, Media forms in production and Australian stories).
Students have had the opportunity to work across multiple media forms of their choice, particularly as part of U1O2 Media forms in production.
Students were tasked with working in two media forms of their choice, to explore a connection with Outcome 1 representation. Students made a variety of content across media forms of their choice from short narrative films, music videos, tv trailers, album covers and photography.

I look forward sharing more of their work with the college community as part of the annual Visual Art and Tech showcase happening in November.
With Unit 1 done and dusted, students are now a few weeks into U2O1 Narrative, style and genre where they will explore the works of famous ‘auteurs’ of film such as Edgar Wright and Jordan Peele, analysing texts such as ‘Get Out’ and ’Scott Pilgrim vs The World’.
We will analyse each director's unique characteristics and style of film making whilst connecting their works to historical and cultural context of their time of production. Year 11’s will get to select a director of their choice and produce a video essay as part of their assessment.
As Term 2 holidays approach, Year 12 Media students are about to dive headfirst into the production of their major assessment for the subject. This year we have an array of media forms students are participating in, from Narrative films, music videos, comic books, zines, children’s books, animations and photography.

It’s amazing to see such a diverse array of media forms, with students choosing to specialise and work within an area they feel most comfortable in. I wish the Year 12’s all the best and can’t wait to see the progress they have made on their productions when we return from the break.
