Year 1 Mathematics

Year 1 students have had a wonderful semester of learning in Mathematics, exploring new concepts through practise, games and real-world experiences. Each Maths lesson begins with a daily retrieval activity, where students revisit and practise previously taught concepts. This helps strengthen their understanding and build confidence as they connect new learning with prior knowledge.

In Number, students have been developing a range of strategies to help them solve addition and subtraction problems with confidence. They have learnt how to use bridge to ten, doubles facts, near doubles, split strategy and fact families. It has been fantastic to also see students being able to explain their thinking.

Students have also enjoyed exploring money through hands-on activities and real-life scenarios. They have practised using notes and coins to make different amounts, solve problems and make purchases, helping them build confidence with money in everyday situations.

Measurement has been a particular highlight this semester. Students explored length by measuring objects around the classroom and comparing their sizes using informal units. They investigated mass using balance scales to compare how heavy or light different objects were. Capacity learning was brought to life through hands-on experiences in the classroom and sandpit, where students explored and compared how much different containers could hold.

It has been wonderful to see the enthusiasm and curiosity students bring to Mathematics each week.  This term, students have continued to build their confidence and develop a positive attitude towards learning Mathematics.

Here is what the students say about their favourite parts of Maths this term:

Aryan: I really enjoyed learning about capacity in the sandpit.

Wade: My favourite part was when I measured capacity with water because it taught me how much a container holds.

Meadha: I liked learning about split strategy in addition and I also liked using the chocolate bar model to learn subtraction.

Charles: I liked learning about subtraction and addition to solve problems.

Leon: I have enjoyed playing maths games with the cards.

Claire: I enjoyed learning about fact families to help us solve addition and subtraction problems.

Melina: I liked learning how to do the split strategy to solve addition and subtraction problems.

Cayla: I liked learning about addition and subtraction together when we did fact families.
