English

In English, this week the students have concluded their knowledge rich unit, 'Farms,' where they have been learning about the different animals you find on a farm and why they are valuable to our society. The students will begin a new unit next week, 'Seasons and Weather,' where they will explore each season in detail and what happens in Australia during each season.

This term, the students are also learning about writing a narrative and each week will focus on a different component of a narrative.

In Phonics, the Preps will continue to consolidate their knowledge of the digraphs: 'ch,' sh' and 'ng.' They will continue to learn about morphology, through the explicit teaching of base words and the suffixes 'ed' and 'plural s.' They will also learn the new high frequency words: 'people, put, could, house, too, by, day'. Your child's classroom teacher will be

working with them on the high frequency words that they have learnt so far this year (55 words, up to Set 10) and a sheet with these words has been sent home in your child's home-reading folder. Words that your child can read correctly will be highlighted, so that you can see which words they are continuing to work on.

Mathematics

Students are continuing to learn about sharing groups equally with no remainders and reading and writing 'teen' numbers. Students are differentiating between 'teen' numbers, that have 'one ten,' and '-ty' numbers such as 20, 30, 40, which have 'zero ones.'

Creative Connections

During Creative Connections we have been building on the students' knowledge of Farms from our Core Knowledge unit, and the students have been creating shopping lists of produce that they may buy at the supermarket that originally came from farms, such as fruit, vegetables, grains, dairy and meat products.
