Library Matters

It’s been another busy term for the library! We’ve been working hard to process all the books our students have requested, and have loaned out 469 books so far this term. Our most popular loans this term show that our students have a wide variety of reading interests:

Book Week

In Week 6 we celebrated Book Week! This week-long event aims to develop a love of reading amongst our students and encourages them to engage in conversations about books and reading with each other and with staff. This year’s theme was Book an Adventure. In our library’s Wide Reading lessons, students in Years 7 and 8 got a taste of this year’s CBCA Book of the Year nominees, with some students enjoying them so much we had a line of reservations placed on some books!

Staff also went above and beyond decorating their doors for this year’s Book Week Door Decorating Competition. There was a healthy rivalry between our top three contenders. Last year’s winners, the Office Staff, created another interactive display featuring two days of in-flight announcements, boarding passes, a snack trolley, and in-flight entertainment in the form of a home-made book read to the team of student judges. Meanwhile, the English faculty blew us away with their Wizard of Oz themed adventure which spanned the entirety of the English block. However, the HSIE faculty eventually won our students’ votes with their interactive, multi-level Jurassic Park themed display, which featured music, giant home-made books, and many escaped dinosaurs! From Sadako, to Pokemon, to Alice in Wonderland, to Dr Seuss, the wonders of reading were on display for all to see!

The highlight of Book Week at EHS is the Cosplay Competition. This was our second year running and we had an excellent turnout, with 25 students signing up for the event. Our winning student team was Olivia B, Chayce C, and Eliza W, who gave a creative Harry Potter themed performance featuring a magical floating feather. Lilly G was our student runner-up, cosplaying as Finn the Human from Adventure Time. The English Faculty took out the staff prize for their extravagant Wizard of Oz costumes, including Ms Phillips as an actual house! Mr Hudson, aka Captain Underpants, was the staff runner-up. The library staff hope that every student and staff member who dressed up had a fantastic time celebrating their love of reading!
