OKTOBERFEST 2025
Our annual whole-school Oktoberfest celebration will be held on Tuesday, 28th October 2025.
Students are invited to come dressed in a Bavarian costume (Dirndlkleid or Lederhosen), or the German flag colours (black, red, and gold/yellow) or the Bavarian flag colours (blue and white).

Students who have ordered a traditional large, savoury German-style pretzel and/or a gingerbread heart will receive these on our Oktoberfest day.
We look forward to a ‘fantastisch’ day for everyone!
On Saturday, 11th October five of our level 5 and 6 students participated in the annual AGTV State Final German Poetry Competition.
Each of these students had won either a first or second place at the regional final in July.
The state final was held at the Austrian Club in Heidelberg.
Students were required to recite a poem to two German-speaking judges, and were judged according to their pronunciation, intonation, phrasing, expression and the overall delivery of their poem.
Prizes were awarded to the top 6 students from each year level/category.
It gives us great pleasure to announce the results:
Level 5
Myra Bansal – 2nd place
Ryan Zhang – 5th place
Level 6
Suhani Bhanoo – 1st place (and winner of the University of Melbourne shield to be displayed in the school foyer for the next 12 months)
Alysha Muhammad Al Fasha – 6th place
A huge ‘Danke schön’ goes to our wonderful German Language Assistant, Frau Myriam Gad, for her outstanding effort and expertise in preparing the students for the competition.
Thank you also to the families of the students for their attendance and support.
A formal presentation of the results will be held during the Oktoberfest assembly commencing 9:30 am in the hall on 28th October, 2025.

GERMAN WORD OF THE WEEK
This week’s German Word of the Week is:
Servus.
Meaning: a Bavarian greeting meaning both „hello“ and „goodbye“.
Have fun saying this phrase in the lead up to Oktoberfest to earn house-points for your team!

By our German Captain,
Maheli

2. Locals don’t refer to Oktoberfest by it’s known name. Instead, they call it ‘Wiesn’, short for ‘Theresienwiese’ (the showgrounds where Oktoberfest is held).

3. Over the course of 200 years, Oktoberfest has only been cancelled 24 times, due to war, cholera epidemics, and the most recent pandemic.

Should you have any queries about how to best support your child’s German language development, we would love to hear from you.
