Outstanding Result in Ethics Olympiad!
In week four of this term, our Ethics Olympiad team had the privilege of competing in the Ethics Olympiad International Final. After being awarded first place against some tough competition in the state heat, we advanced to the International Final where we competed against the best teams from seven countries. We were judged by ethicists and philosophers from all over the world!
For those of you who have never heard of the Ethics Olympiad before, here is a quick rundown. Despite its name, the Ethics Olympiad is less of a competition and more of a discussion. With reference to specific cases, students have to discuss real world dilemmas through a moral and ethical lens. We are marked on our ability to engage in respectful and critical discussion, apply ethical frameworks to current issues, and, most importantly, form a view that accounts for both sides of an argument. Therefore, the Ethics Olympiad addresses a key part of political and social discourse that is missing in our current world - the art of respectful and considerate discussion.
The day is made up of three 90 minute heats, which involve lots of intense thinking. We were delighted to find out that out of 44 teams across seven countries competing in the international final, BMGS placed FOURTH! This is an amazing achievement and is indicative of our extraordinary effort and teamwork.
A special thank you to Mr. Webb, whose enthusiasm and support have made this opportunity so rewarding! We are endlessly grateful for your kindness, and I am confident in saying that my team and many other students at BMGS look to you as a role model of moral and ethical character.
And, of course, congratulations to everyone on the team: Eliza Umbers (Yr 10), Elizabeth Isbister (Yr 10), and Nisha Rehn (Yr 10). A special shoutout to Audrey Clarke (Yr 10) who stepped in at the last minute for the final!
