Welcome to Year 4 carers and families! We are so excited for what this year has to bring! In week 6 the Year 4 students are kicking off their fun filled year with swimming! Please check compass for information about this.
In Year 4 we have been undertaking Novel Studies as part of our Core Knowledge curriculum! All Year 4’s have been reading a copy of ‘The One and Only Ivan’ by Katherine Applegate and investigating the ways in which authors use figurative language, such as similes, metaphors and rhetorical questions, to convey meaning to make reading more interesting. For writing so far we have been focusing on identifying the subject and predicate in a sentence and writing various sentence types with appropriate punctuation.

In Numeracy this month students have been learning about place value. We have practised recognising the place value of each digit in a 6-digit number and then partitioning the number into its place value parts. Students have learned how to order numbers in ascending and descending order. We have learned the symbols for greater than, less than and equals to and have ordered numbers accordingly.
Students have also been learning about telling time to the minute and converting between units of time. We have learned about 2D and 3D shapes and how to match a 3D shape to its net.
GPPS is proud to announce that we will be using The Resilience Project (TRP) as the foundation of our SEL lesson each week. TRP is committed to teaching positive mental health strategies to prevent mental ill-health and build young people’s capacity to deal with adversity. Teachers and students will engage in weekly lessons and activities around the key principles of Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness (GEM), and Emotional Literacy to build resilience. Students each have a TRP journal that they work out of and track positive habits. We cannot wait to share what we have been practising.
We were very excited to introduce Auslan this month. Students have learned about what Auslan is and why people communicate with Auslan. We have learned how to sign the alphabet and finger spell our names. Students have also learned how to sign different colours.
Our Investigations this month are directly linked to our Novel Studies Text “The One and Only Ivan.” Students learned about decreasing gorilla species and compared gorillas in the wild to gorillas in captivity like Ivan.
