Staff Profile
Steve Firman
I’m Steven Firman, artist and teacher of Visual Communication Design. As I said at my interview, on the last day of school, last December. This is my DREAM job! I was working at another local school last year on a semi- permanent basis, and really enjoyed the interactions with students, encouraging them to be their best selves. And now I have my very own classes, with the dynamic students of Scoresby Secondary College.
For several years I have shared a visual art studio at Burrinja Community Arts Centre, Upwey, as well as a two year tenure as Artist in Residence at Box Hill Art Centre.
I have also taught at International Schule Ruhr in Germany, where I lived for three years, when my now teenagers were beginning school. And had the privilege of working with Indigenous students from the bush at Yirrara Lutheran College for two years.
So what is Visual Communication Design? It’s a way of channeling creativity to a practical use – as communication, computer animation, product design, building and landscape design. This kind of study has direct application to the real world. I believe that the arts, combining the left brain analytical with the right brain creativity are more important than ever. In a world overwhelmed with social media, creativity can help us understand and be resilient to the challenges of contemporary society.
Upcoming event: as a part of Knoxlink Arts Project, I’ll have a few of my newer artworks based on Luna Park at Schocolade Café in Stud Rd shops, from 19 March, for a few months!
