Triumph and Team Spirit

TC Boys Shine at WA Junior Rapidplay Chess Championship

In a display of skill and camaraderie, TC boys showcased their talent at the recent WA Junior Rapidplay Chess Championship. With a total of 7 competitors in the Under 18 category and 1 in the Under 12's, our team left an indelible mark on the tournament.

Among our exceptional participants, Antony Milner distinguished himself by securing a merit award, a testament to his dedication and strategic prowess on the chessboard.

However, it wasn't just individual achievements that defined our boys' performance. Throughout the championship, each participant demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and a spirit of camaraderie that truly reflected the values of our school community.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all our competitors: Jack Uhlmann, Mitchell Christianopoulos, Henry Gebauer, Aandeep (Aan) Sran, Sudhit Kokkula, Thomas Batten, Antony Milner, and our youngest contender, year 4 student Joshua Lim. Your commitment, resilience, and teamwork are commendable, and we are immensely proud of your accomplishments.

As we continue to foster a culture of excellence and sportsmanship at TC, we look forward to supporting our students in their future endeavours, both on and off the chessboard.

Year 10 Geography Excursion

The Year 10 Geography students embarked on a fieldtrip expedition this week to the Herdsman Lake Discovery Centre, bringing their classroom learnings to life, in the real world. This immersive experience included hands-on water quality testing, in-depth study of invertebrates, captivating wildlife surveys, and an insightful tour of the Discovery Centre.

Throughout the day, students gained an understanding of the transformations our city has undergone in the past 50 years, as well as discovering ways to mitigate the impacts of these changes. Thank you to the industry experts who offered valuable knowledge and advice about environmental science and showcasing the opportunities Geography offers beyond the classroom.

Year 10 History Excursion

As a part of the Year 10 History course, on Tuesday the 27th of February Year 10 students visited the Holocaust Institute of Western Australia. The excursion, in addition to classroom activities, further developed the boys’ depth of understanding of the causes and consequences of the Holocaust, a dark chapter in Europe’s 20th century history. Below are the reflections of Year 10 student, Kyan Tremain.

‘World War II and the Holocaust is often seen as one of the most important and devastating events in modern history, so it is important to fully understand the hardships that millions of innocent citizens experienced, most especially the Jewish population. After researching the Second World War and it’s affects over the past weeks, we expanded our understand through the recorded testimony of a Romanian Holocaust survivor. This testimony brought new light to the hardships and sadness experienced by approximately 6 million European Jews over the cause of the Holocaust. The survivor managed to endure being forced out of her own home, living in unsanitary ghettos, being separated from her family, and living in a concentration camp. It really shows how grateful we are to live in a stable, free country without fear of persecution.’

Year 11 ATAR Psych 2024

By Charlie McDonald

ATAR Psychology this year for me as a year 11, has been one of the stand outs as far as subjects go. The course has been informative and structured in a way that allows me and my classmates to learn effectively and have time to consolidate all we have learnt through the key notes we’ve been provided.

So far as a class we're slowly finishing the first module of psychology which has been one that is both interesting and challenging, from naming the parts of the brain by colouring in miniature skulls to visualise our own brain, to understanding the effects that certain drugs have on our neurotransmitters  and constructing neurons with lollies and labels whilst learning about the neural pathways that make up our biological division of psychology.

Recently to further visualise and demonstrate the makeup of the brain, we dissected a sheep’s brain. This practical lesson saw the class locate certain areas within the brain and pick out key features like finding the glands and location of the lobes on the cortex.

Psychology with the help of Ms. Fenwick has been a class that has expanded my understanding of the brain and of behaviour and has enabled me to look forward to study the subject after school.
