Proactively responding the mental health needs of our students

Maslow's heirarcy of needs and its relevance to student learning:

Physiological Needs: For students, basic needs like nutrition, sleep, and health must be met before they can focus effectively on learning. If a student is hungry, tired, or unwell, their ability to concentrate and engage in schoolwork will be impaired.

Safety Needs: A stable and safe learning environment is crucial. Students need to feel secure in their physical environment and in their personal lives. If they are worried about their safety or stability at home or school, it can distract them from their studies and affect their ability to learn.

Love and Belongingness Needs: Positive relationships with peers, teachers, and family contribute to a supportive learning environment. When students feel accepted and valued by their peers and teachers, they are more likely to participate actively and feel motivated. A strong sense of belonging can foster a positive attitude towards school and learning.

Esteem Needs: Achieving success and receiving recognition can boost students' self-esteem and motivation. Encouraging students, providing constructive feedback, and celebrating their achievements can help them build confidence and a positive self-image, which enhances their learning experience.

Self-Actualization Needs: At the top of the hierarchy, self-actualization involves realizing one's potential and pursuing personal growth. When students are able to explore their interests, pursue passions, and engage in creative and critical thinking, they experience a deeper sense of satisfaction and motivation in their learning journey.
