Connect: Year 6
Term Two 2024 - 6A, 6B & 5/6C
Dear Families,
We have had a very exciting week. It was fantastic to see the 5/6 students dressed up in their green and gold to celebrate the Olympics. Our students continue to be involved in a range of activities throughout their week including, buddies, peacemakers, INSPIRE and play leaders, eco-warriors and SRC. Participation in these activities offers benefits that extend beyond the classroom including developing skills such as teamwork, leadership, time management and problem solving.
Key Dates
Curriculum Day - 2nd August
SRC Free Dress Day - 9th August.
Brainstorm productions - 15th August.
Book Week - 19th August.
Professor Bunsen - 20th August.

Upcoming Learning
Literacy
Students continue to be involved in reading our mentor text Runt. We are analysing the Author's craft. The term "author's craft" refers to the specific techniques and methods that writers use to tell a story or convey a message effectively. It encompasses a wide range of elements that contribute to the overall quality and impact of a piece of writing. Here are some key components of an author's craft:
Style: This includes the author's word choice, sentence structure, and overall language use. Style can be formal or informal, straightforward or complex, descriptive or concise.
Tone: The attitude or feeling that the writer conveys through their writing. Tone can be serious, humorous, sarcastic, melancholic, etc.
Voice: The unique personality and perspective of the author that comes through in the writing. Voice makes an author's work distinct and recognizable.
Point of View: The perspective from which the story is told. Common points of view include first person (using "I" or "we"), second person (using "you"), and third person (using "he," "she," "they").
During writing sessions students were explicitly taught the craft of writing an information report and are now working to create their own information reports on an object, place and animal.
Numeracy
Our measurement and geometry unit involves understanding volume and capacity. This is crucial in both mathematics and everyday life. Volume measures the amount of space an object occupies, typically expressed in cubic units, while capacity refers to the amount a container can hold, usually measured in liters or gallons. These concepts are essential for tasks ranging from filling a swimming pool to cooking and engineering. Grasping the principles of volume and capacity helps students comprehend the physical world, make informed decisions, and solve real-world problems efficiently. By learning about volume and capacity, students develop spatial awareness and practical skills that are valuable across various disciplines and activities.
Decimals, fractions and percentages will be our Number and Algebra focus. Understanding the relationship between fractions, percentages, and decimals is key to mastering many mathematical concepts and solving real-world problems. Students will learn that fractions represent parts of a whole using a numerator and denominator. Decimals express these parts in a base-10 format, making them easier to use in calculations. Percentages represent parts per hundred and are often used to describe proportions and comparisons. Converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages allows for a more flexible approach to solving problems, interpreting data, and making informed decisions in daily life, from shopping discounts to understanding statistics. Mastering these conversions strengthens mathematical literacy and enhances problem-solving abilities.
Wellbeing
Our Wellbeing focus will be gender norms and involves exploring the roles and behaviours that society traditionally associates with being male or female. It is crucial to foster an understanding of these concepts in a way that promotes equality, respect, and self-expression. By discussing gender norms, students can learn to critically analyse stereotypes and the impact they have on individuals and society. Encouraging open conversations about gender helps students appreciate diversity and understand that everyone should have the freedom to pursue their interests and express themselves without being confined by societal expectations.
Thank you for your continued support.
