The Next Fortnight of Learning

Literacy

In the next fortnight of learning students will continue to explore Historical Fiction texts. Students will draw on facts, stories and knowledge of the Gold Rush to study mentor texts including The Night They Stormed Eureka. They will utilise their understanding of the diverse people's experiences and events to generate fictional characters for their writing. This will allow them to detail characters inside and outside traits to begin to plan and draft their own Historical Fiction texts.

Maths

For the next fortnight students will be converting measurements to determine the area and perimeter of regular and irregular shapes. Students will be learning to select and use the correct unit of measurement, convert between different units of measurement and solve problems involving the comparison of different area.

Students will also continue their focus on multiplication as part of our maths learning. This will involve exploring problem solving tasks that encourage the development of multiplicative thinking, which is defined as the ability to work flexibly with the concepts, strategies and representations of multiplication.

Inquiry

Over the next two weeks students will begin exploring the inner planets of the solar system. This will include investigating the planets Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. To guide this exploration students will research questions such as; Who discovered the planet, and when? What is the atmosphere of the planet? What is the weather and temperature of the planet? How long is a day and a year on the planet?

Wellbeing

This term as part of our Wellbeing learning students will be exploring the following topics:

  • Gender and Identity
  • Help Seeking
  • Positive and negative emotions
  • Recognising mixed emotions

Problem Solving Maths

Here is an example of a recent problem solving task given to students in Year 5. Students worked together to find multiple solutions and were required to explain their thinking in a clear and organised way. It was excellent to see students persisting when the task was difficult for them. We encourage families to give this a go at home and see if your child can explain how they solved this task to you!
