Mental Health

The Black Dog Institute work tirelessly in engaging young people to prevent the onset of anxiety, depression, and psychological distress.

Mental ill health starts at a young age

About three-quarters of common mental health problems emerge before the age of 25 years old. Common mental health conditions occur predominantly in adolescence to mid-20s, making these years critical for early intervention.  More than 40% of Year 12 students report symptoms of anxiety and depression higher than the normal range for their age group.

In their latest research area they are:

  • testing prevention programs for young people through digital platforms;
  • screening and managing mental health problems in school environments;
  • building the capacity of parents, guardians and school facilitators to support young people;
  • examining digital phenotyping as a means of early detection;
  • using Artificial Intelligence to develop better treatments faster.

By focusing on early detection while delivering evidence-based programs and digital interventions to young people, we are slowing the onset and burden of mental ill health for future generations.
