NAIDOC Excursion

KURNAI COLLEGE

On Thursday 25 July, a group of students and staff from Frankston High School attended the transformative NAIDOC celebrations at Kurnai College. It was an unforgettable occasion filled with insightful guest speakers, mesmerizing performances, and heartfelt reflections on Indigenous culture.

Talia Cook's presentation was a highlight, where she eloquently shared her journey of embracing her culture while navigating university life. Her pride and determination resonated deeply, illustrating the significance of cultural identity in personal growth.

Witnessing Dedlee Kultya perform traditional dances was truly captivating. Their movements spoke volumes about their deep connection to Gunaikurnai culture, leaving an indelible mark on everyone present.

Nanette Channing's session was equally moving, as she recounted her experiences of educating others about Indigenous culture through vibrant murals. Her artwork, unveiling the secrets of bush tucker, was a powerful testament to the importance of preserving and sharing cultural knowledge.

Mandy Garling's musical performance was soul-stirring, demonstrating how music can bridge generations and preserve indigenous languages. Her passion for connecting through music was both inspiring and uplifting.

James Solomon's perspective, drawn from his extensive travels and experiences in the defense force, emphasized the importance of cultural understanding in personal and professional life. His insights resonated deeply with all, highlighting the value of embracing diversity.

Principal Anthony Rodaughan provided an inspiring overview of Kurnai College's initiatives to integrate Indigenous culture into the school community, from the creation of an Indigenous garden to bilingual room namings. Their commitment serves as a shining example of fostering cultural pride and awareness.

As we reflect on this enriching experience, we are eager to explore ways to bring similar initiatives to Frankston High School, fostering a deeper connection with the Bunurong culture. Let us celebrate and embrace diversity together, creating a community where all cultures are honored and respected. Thank you to Mr John Russell for organising this special experience.
