NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC Week Assembly and Smoking Ceremony

The celebration began with a traditional Smoking Ceremony, skilfully conducted by Eric Brown. Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students honoured the occasion with a captivating traditional dance, showcasing their cultural heritage and pride.

We were privileged to receive a Welcome to Country from Aunty Marge Dixon, who shared her personal stories and experiences of growing up as an Aboriginal person. Her words offered valuable insights and deepened our understanding of the rich cultural history and challenges faced by Aboriginal communities.

The assembly also featured inspiring talks from notable speakers. Kylie Captain, the Director of Dream Big Education Wellbeing & Consulting, shared her remarkable journey and achievements, offering a powerful testament to the importance of perseverance and education. Her story served as an inspiration to all students, encouraging them to dream big and strive for success. Adding to the day's inspiration, Brigidine alumna Marnie Bathis spoke about her journey since leaving school, reflecting on the experiences and lessons that have shaped her path. Her talk resonated deeply with current students, illustrating the diverse possibilities and opportunities available post-graduation. We also extend our gratitude to Petra Silva from the Strengthening Our Mob Program for her insightful contributions at the assembly and her ongoing work with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Her support and dedication are invaluable in fostering a strong and inclusive community.

This uplifting event was made possible through the dedication and hard work of many, especially Natalie Harkins, our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Coordinator. Her efforts in organizing the ceremony and assembly ensured that the celebration was both educational and inspiring, fostering a deeper appreciation and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures within our school community.

NAIDOC Week at Brigidine College Randwick reminds us of the importance of cultural awareness, respect, and unity. As we continue through Term 3, we are inspired to uphold these values and work towards a more inclusive future.
