Dante Alighieri Society Poetry Recitation Competition

Every year, students from Years 9-12 across the State dive into the Poetry Recitation Competition, a challenge designed to boost their confidence and speaking skills in Italian. In 2024, over 1,400 students from 42 Victorian schools took part in this exhilarating event.

On June 6th, as the clock ticked away on a live video call with their judge, students from Years 9 and 11 at Marian College took the stage—virtually—reciting the Italian poems they had carefully selected and rehearsed for the first round. Despite the jitters, our students showcased remarkable resilience and bravery, tackling an experience new to many of them.

A week later, excitement soared as two Year 9 students, Danica and Nicole, received their invitation to the prestigious Finals at the University of Melbourne. Though they were away on camp, the news, delivered by Ms. Gaudiano, was met with jubilant cheers from the entire cohort.

On the brisk morning of June 25th, Danica, Nicole, and Prof. Milani set off for the city, poised to make their mark at the University of Melbourne. Despite a few organizational hiccups, both girls triumphantly advanced to the Grand Finals, ranking among the top 15 Year 9 students in Victoria.

After a quick lunch, a scenic walk, and a delicious cannolo, the students returned to the university for their final face-off with the judging panel. When they emerged, their satisfaction with their performances was evident.

Yet, the best was yet to come. During the first week of the school holidays, their satisfaction blossomed into elation as the final results were unveiled. In the Year 9 Non-Italian category, Nicole clinched the top spot, with Danica following closely in second place. Marian College proudly took home both the gold and silver medals!

The award ceremony, set for the early weeks of Term 4, will celebrate these remarkable achievements. The entire College Community extends heartfelt congratulations to Nicole and Danica for their outstanding results and wishes them continued success in their Italian studies. Kudos also to all Marian College students who participated in this vibrant competition!
