From the Classroom

STEM in 5 and 6 & Project Rockit!
Science: Marvellous Micro-Organisms
This term in Science the Year 5 and 6s having been learning about micro-oganisms. Micro-organisms are tiny living organisms that are too small to be seen with the naked eye. There are three main groups: viruses, bacteria and fungi. So far, we have investigated yeast and mould, which are types of fungi. We have been learning about the different conditions yeast and mould need to grow. Take a look at some of our science experiments:
Digital Technology: Spheros
This term, our Year 5 and 6 students have been exploring coding, starting with different types of coding, including block coding on Scratch. They are now moving on to coding with a robot called Sphero. So far, students have learnt how to control the Sphero by changing its colours, aiming it in different directions, and programming it to follow shapes they have drawn.
Project Rockit!
Today the Year 5 and 6s students took part in a bullying incursion by Project Rockit. We learnt about the different types of bullying: verbal, relational, online and physical. We then played “level up” to think about what actions we could be proud of and what actions we could have done better next time. It made us think about: “Am I going to be a part of the problem or part of the solution?”
We then learnt about some strategies to help someone being bullied:
- Use Power in Numbers: show your disapproval by changing the look on your face, stand next to the person being targeted and help get them out of there, spread positivity and give compliments
- Be Assertive, not aggressive: use a strong voice and body language to show confidence, blocking and reporting nasty comments online
- Create a distraction: change the topic or create a distraction to move people on from what is happening
- Reach out: pick an adult you can trust, tell them what kind of help you need and share how you feel, be honest and specific
We then ended the session writing some messages of support like:
