This week our 3–6 students got tangled up in a Book Week-themed STEM activity inspired by Spiro by Anna McGregor, shortlisted for the 2025 CBCA Book of the Year Awards. Just like Spiro, the determined little spider, our students had to show perseverance and effort as they spun their way through a coding challenge.

The challenge involved coding their own Spiro to collect its dinner caught within its web. Of course, things didn’t always go to plan, some spiders skittered too slowly, others zoomed a little too quickly, and a few got caught in their own coding webs. But with perseverance, like Spiro, students made changes to speed, timing, and directions until their very own Spiro could scuttle successfully after its meal.

It was a perfect reminder that, just like Spiro, success comes from sticking with it, even if you need to untangle a few tricky webs along the way. Check out some of the photos to see what our clever spiders spun up, and keep a lookout on our school’s Instagram for a video…we promise it’ll be worth getting caught up in!
