Year 3/4 - Newsletter

Dear Parents & Carers,

It was so wonderful to see all of the amazing and creative costumes at our Book Day parade on Tuesday! We loved seeing our 3/4 students working with students from other classes to create their map of ‘The Zoo That Moved’ during our Book Day activities.

What's happened in 3/4 this fortnight?

English

During our Structured Literacy sessions, we have learnt some new spelling rules, including the c/k/ck rule and the que/qu for K rule. We have continued learning about prefixes, this week learning the prefix in which means in, on or not.

In our writing sessions we have built up our note taking skills, learning how to use shorthand and take efficient notes. We have also continued learning about different sentence types, this week learning how to combine two simple sentences to create a compound sentence. We have also kept going with our information report on the Coorong, finishing our body paragraphs before moving on to our conclusion.

In reading, we are working through Storm Boy by Colin Thiele, discussing his use of various literary devices as we read.

Maths

This week in maths we have continued our unit on multiplication and division. We have explored the connections between multiplication and division and learnt how we can use our times tables knowledge to help us solve division problems. We also learnt how to use the bus stop (short division) strategy to solve division problems with and without remainders.

Inquiry

This week in inquiry we have explored food labels and the information we can get from them. We discussed the effects of different nutrients on our bodies and how we can make smart choices about the foods we eat and use to fuel our bodies.

Edendale Farm Excursion:

On Thursday 11th and Friday 12th of September all Year 3 and 4 students will be walking across to Edendale Farm for an excursion. Please check COMPASS for all the event details, and to consent / pay for your child’s attendance. Please contact the office if you need any assistance with this.

We would also like some parent helpers from each class for this excursion. If you can attend the excursion, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.

Inquiry Resource request:

We are asking that students begin collecting and keeping any shoe size cardboard boxes or pieces of cardboard. We will be using these for our upcoming Design and Technology lessons where we will be designing and constructing nesting and resting homes for our local wildlife. Please leave boxes at home until Week 7 (Monday 1st September).

Friendology/Wellbeing
