Every day matters
Dear Homestead Community,
With exams around the corner, a very curious Year 12 student recently asked me the pertinent question-What is in an A?
Behind every grade of course, sits hours of practice, perseverance, and support from both teachers and families.
While it has been a short one, it has certainly been busy and productive for both our students and our staff. It feels like just a few weeks ago that we finished exams, and here we are staring down another period, this time with our Year 12 students beginning their practice exams before the real thing in October and November.
I have previously written to you about the concepts of perception and reality. It feels particularly important to remind our students of the importance of these two words as what lies ahead approaches quickly.
Too often the perception is that VCE or VM is a participation certificate, “if I show up, I’ll be right.” The reality could not be further from this.
So, the answer to “What is in an A?” is where reality must set in.
What sits inside an A is relentless hard work, dedication to seeking and accepting feedback from teachers, and importantly, making micro corrections that lead to improved knowledge and skills.
In an A resides the mentality that the bare minimum is not enough, that there are vast numbers of students across the state who are working hard, and that you must work even harder.
An A requires sacrifice, knowing that the next two months matter more than ever.
In an A is unrelenting resilience and perseverance to ensure that the hard work ahead of us is seen as a winnable challenge, not defeat. In an A is also gratitude to our teachers who are pushing students to work hard and who are burning the midnight oil to provide genuine feedback designed to support our students.
In writing this, I need to be clear. I do not expect all students to be receiving an A, but I do have a strong desire to ensure all students achieve the very best they can. The advice provided above is equally relevant to those aiming to get their VCE or VM certificate, as it is for those striving for that A.
Parents, the advice above is not only for students, this is also your moment to shine. What can you do? You can provide unrelenting support and encouragement. You can provide a home that is suitably prepared for late-night study. You can provide nutritious food, and you can protect your young person from other pressures of young adult life. These small acts make an enormous difference in helping your young person stay focused and confident.
As we enter this final stretch, I encourage every member of our community, students, parents, and staff, to lean into the challenge together. With focus, resilience, and support, I have no doubt that our students will finish the year proud of what they have achieved.
