Year 1/2 Update: Radical Roller Coasters!
This Term, the Year 1/2 students are exploring the big question: “What is a machine?” They have been getting hands-on in a series of problem-solving exercises, including the construction of roller coasters using nothing but straws, Blu Tack and ping pong balls! Looking forward, the students will be designing and creating other simple machines including pulleys, lifts and vehicles.
These tasks fall under the umbrella of STEM, wherein students combine Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics concepts to solve problems. During their roller coaster task, they were also required to work in groups and develop their collaboration and communication skills. Planning, building and evaluating all come into play, which links with our Literacy genre procedural writing. We will also be exploring connections to digital technologies, including programming small robots.
We have an exciting learning journey ahead for the remainder of the year. We can’t wait to see where it will take us!
