Excellence & Enrichment Program (EEP)
November Update
Year 7 and 8 EEP students went on an excursion where they went to the MCG for a tour of the grounds where they guides provided an understand of the magnitude of engineering and work to maintain such an iconic sport venue. Students not only had the opportunity to see the grounds and various facilities that support athletes and coaches, they also learnt about the various sporting feats and records that have taken place at the MCG since its construction.
After the tour EEP students had the privilege of hearing former 4-time Australian Olympian Jenny Donnet speak to the group about her experiences as not only an Olympian but also as a flag bearer in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Students gained insight into the mentality needed to compete and train at the elite level as well as her thoughts on what it takes to be a successful person. Although training and dedication was emphasised, her discussions about support teams and rest resonated with students. Students linked her ideas with how it allowed her to compete as a consistent top 10 athlete in diving for 16 consecutive years during her career. Jacob Morrison-Broughan in particular was able to discuss with Jenny his connection with diving through a former school friend who may be a potential Australian Olympian in the near future.
When Donnet finished her discussion with students, the class explored the sights and sounds of the museum with students looking at the many artifacts of various sports that were held in Melbourne and especially the MCG. Students showed great interest in exploring the museums various exhibits.
Overall, a great way to end Term 4 for EEP and looking forward to the exciting directions the future will bring to the program with many new and talented Year 7 students to join in 2024. Under the new leadership of Joanne Valis, EEP students will no doubt have an exciting 2024 ahead.
It’s been a pleasure to have led the EEP classes these last two years!
