Year 9 Maths

Topic: Rates, Ratios and Proportions; Strand: Number and Algebra; Sub-Strand: Real Numbers

Recently, our Year 9 students completed a session that was very exciting and engaging a hands-on maths activity as part of Maths BIG IDEAS. It was a differentiated task, and students' level of understanding was assessed through their fraction additive, multiplicative and division thinking skills. Students were able to physically compare different fractions and calculate the value of different colours in this image. Through this activity, students used ‘HOW MUCH’ and ‘HOW MANY’ each time they calculated the value of each partition.

Explicit Teaching:

The classroom maths teacher modelled the example on the board and allowed students to complete the guided learning task, and the teacher encouraged students to use as many methods as possible. During this time, the teacher provided support if needed. The final task was an independent and hands -on task. Students used Cuisenaire rods to model the shape and to find the value of the rods.

Outcomes: Students visualised and analysed the given image based on fractional relationships.

What next? As it is an open-ended task, students will be using their multi - strand skills in analysing the image, such as number and algebra, measurements, and statistics and probability. The classroom teacher will facilitate and provide support for their way of thinking.

Challenges: Patience and a growth mindset in math.
