CURRICULUM FOCUS
This week in Maths we are learning to solve a worded mathematical problem.
I can solve a mathematical problem.
I can solve a mathematical problem and check my answer to see if I need to change my thinking.
I can find all of the possibilities and prove my answer by explaining my thinking.
VOCABULARY
Worded mathematical problem: a maths question written as one sentence or more that requires children to apply their maths knowledge to a 'real-life' scenario.
ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING
Story Problem Solving
Materials: Paper, pencil, and small objects (like toys or blocks).
Activity: Create simple story problems based on everyday situations, like: "You have 8 apples and give 3 to your friend. How many apples are left?" Ask your child to solve the problem using objects or drawings, then explain their answer. Afterward, ask them to check if their answer makes sense (e.g. “If you gave away 3, do you still have 8?”).
Learning Goal: Practice solving real-life math problems and checking answers by thinking about the context of the problem.
