From Little Sprouts, to Little Chefs

Recently on one sunny Thursday, our Preschool class enjoyed an excursion to the Adelaide Botanic Gardens.

Building on children’s interest in God’s creation, particularly plants and mini beasts, we set off to the Botanic Gardens to learn more. We enjoyed a walk through the gardens, observing and noticing the beautifully unique plants growing around us.

As we strolled under the canopy of cool, overhanging foliage, we marvelled at the height of the trees growing around us. We were excited to discover some of the beautiful Chihuly art glass garden sculptures along our journey to the Little Sprout Garden Kitchen.

We spent our morning at the Garden Kitchen where we investigated worms and how they help our garden. We harvested a range of fresh produce from the garden and planted our own snow pea seeds to take back to Preschool to nurture and grow. We are waiting expectantly until they have grown and are ready to eat!

What a beautiful day out enjoying the wonders of God’s creation!

Over the days following, our class became little chefs, using a collection of fresh produce harvested from our excursion to bake and make some tasty dishes together, including pickled beetroot, ‘rainbow’ salad and silver beet cheese pie and this was a wonderful opportunity to be risk takers and try new foods that may not be our regular favourites.

Our little gardeners have also been good stewards by taking care of our Preschool garden, watering it daily and we are beginning to see the fruit of our strawberry and cherry tomato bushes. We are eagerly waiting to harvest and enjoy these tasty spoils!

As we foster opportunities for children to investigate and explore nature and the natural environment, the basic needs of living things, and how to protect them, we are building their capacity as socially responsible citizens and nurturing their innate interest in the world around them.
