Literacy
An exciting fortnight in Grade 1 as we said our “goodbyes” to our narratives and said “hello” to persuasive writing!! Students worked with their teacher to create an anchor chart on the author’s purpose behind persuading, which we concluded is when an author is convincing you to believe something or do something. We read our first persuasive text ‘I wanna Iguana’ where students identified the purpose. This then led to a lovely discussion around emotive language which are words that create emotion in the reader and how images in a story can do the same thing.
Teachers and students worked collaboratively to write a class persuasive to another Grade 1 class using emotive language. Later in the fortnight students then looked at other multimodal texts such as TV commercials, picture books and advertisement posters to identify the purpose and emotive language used when persuading.
In Word Work, students have been recognising and responding to the sound patterns ‘ough’, ‘oe’ and ‘oa’. Students also referred back to the multisyllabic words from previous sessions, such as: amazing, and wonderful, and discussed how these would enhance our class persuasive pieces.
Preview of learning:
Students will continue with their persuasive writing using various techniques to enhance their knowledge.
Numeracy
Students have continued to review concepts this fortnight, including length and weight. They also revised the addition and subtraction link and started reviewing multiplication. Grade 1's have done amazing learning the new routine around Daily Review and will continue this in Grade 2.
Preview of learning:
We will continue revising multiplication and division and start revising time and money. Over the next few weeks, we will also begin fun games and activities as we come to the end of the year.
Inquiry
This fortnight in Inquiry, we learnt about air pollution and how it damages our Earth. Students learnt that air pollution creates global problems and how they have a responsibility to help reduce the amount of air pollution on our planet. Students committed to turning off lights, unplugging electronics and walking or riding to school. We also learnt about water and why clean, unpolluted water is important. Students developed an understanding on wastewater and how our dirty water ends up back in our clean bodies of water. We then explored the cycle of water and how it goes into a reservoir, through a water treatment plant and then through the pipes to our homes. Students committed to reducing their water use by turning off the taps when brushing teeth, having quick showers and collecting rainwater to water the plants.

In the coming weeks we will reflect on all the things we have learnt this term about taking care of earth. Students will share strategies and commitments they have made to reduce, reuse and recycle.
Wellbeing
Learning in Action
It has been another busy couple of weeks in our Grade 1 COMMUNITY!
As we near the end of the year, we have continued to prioritise opportunities for students to find a sense of calm in their busy days. We have enjoyed guiding the students through a range of activities such as mindfulness / meditation, guided visualisations, yoga, 5 finger breathing, mindfulness colouring etc. Whilst most students seem to have a favourite way to practise mindfulness and being calm, we have been proud of how they have been open to trying different activities - even if it is not their favourite!
This week we also had some lovely discussions with Grade 1s about how at Lysterfield P.S. are a community. We also have our special community in Grade 1 but each class is also its own community. Each and every student in Grade 1 is an important part of our community; each bringing their own strengths, ideas and perspectives. This led to some beautiful conversations where students acknowledged the ways each individual makes our little community stronger.
