Year 1/2

Literacy

In their author study of Julia Donaldson,  students have created their own stories inspired by 'The Gruffalo' and 'The Smartest Giant in Town'. They have explored comprehension strategies, such as like text-to-self and 'text-to-world' connections, through Donaldson's books, connecting the stories to their own experiences and the world around them. By exploring her use of rhyme and structure, students have developed their reading and writing skills, creating imaginative stories of their own.

Maths

Students have been learning addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using Australian notes and coins. Through hands-on activities with play money, they have practiced adding and subtracting amounts, while developing an understanding of how money is used in everyday life. This practical approach not only strengthens their maths skills but also helps them grasp the value of money and how it plays a role in budgeting and making purchases. Students have also been learning about the capacity of containers using cups and sand.

Developmental Play

Students have been developing their oral language skills through developmental play, engaging in conversations with peers and practising storytelling. This hands-on approach has helped them build vocabulary, improve communication, and gain confidence. As part of their growth, they have had opportunities to speak in front of an audience, sharing who they play with and what activities they enjoy. This has not only enhanced their speaking skills but also boosted their self-assurance in expressing themselves to others.

SEL

Students have been learning to identify their emotions and understand how different situations can impact how they feel. This has helped them develop self-awareness and empathy, enabling them to manage their emotions and respond thoughtfully to others. Through discussions and activities, students are building important skills for emotional regulation and creating stronger, more positive relationships.
