The Making of the Map
In the 3 November edition of The Mercury, journalist Sue Bailey told the story of two knockabout Glenorchy schoolboys, Richard Sadek and Michael Crossin, both former students of the College – Richard (SVC1963-70) and Michael (SVC 1963-69). The pair have been mates since they were seven.
Before moving to Elwick, Michael’s grandfather was a blacksmith/farrier and ran his business from a shop at Glenorchy which Richard’s dad pulled down to build a newsagency.
Living not far from the racecourse, the pair loved horses and as adults went on to purchase 11 racehorses together.

The focal point of Sue Bailey’s story was Richard and Michael’s relationship with The Map, a six year old mare they had bred in Tasmania. Three years ago they sold The Map for $35,000 and she has gone on to win $865,000 in prizemoney. Richard is still a part-owner but Michael gave up his share because he had too many other horses. Sadly The Map finished well back in the big race. In the same edition, the Mercury carried this cartoon.
Another interesting addition to the article was of Michael and Richard in a 1963 class photo.
