Wellbeing Partnerships and Safety

As we begin a new term after what I hope has been a restful and well earnt break for our College community, it is timely for us all to have a reset before we begin the term ahead of us. For us at Marist-Sion College, this has meant revisiting our College School Wide Expectations with all students in our first wellbeing lesson back. Our College school-wide expectations are three specific and positively stated behaviours that are the agreed way of operating within the school community. They provide a common vision, language, and guide for our behaviours in every interaction within the College and form part of our whole school approach to positive behaviour.
At Marist Sion the School Wide Expectations are;
- Be Respectful
- Be Responsible
- Be Safe
During the wellbeing lesson's this week, students were asked to unpack what Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be Safe looks like in the classroom and the yard – and how it looks between student to student and between student and staff interactions. Quite often when we discuss behaviour we tell student what they can't do, and while sometimes this is important, it can be a futile exercise if we have not told them what they can do instead. This helps us create the environments where students are taught how to behave more positively.
Creating consistent, predictable routines has been proven to soothe the nervous system and support learning. At Marist-Sion College, teachers are asked to begin each lesson with the following routines. These routines should be consistent across all classroom settings. With clear and consistent expectations, teachers an assist with student self-regulation and preparedness for learning.
Heritage Day
On Thursday 15 August, the College will again celebrate Heritage Day. Heritage Day is an opportunity for all students and staff to join together to celebrate the history of our College, to connect with the charisms of Marist and Sion, to have fun as a community and build on positive relationships. It also provides us with this opportunity to reflect on what we value and appreciate about our school.
The structure of the day will see the students attending in sports uniform. During Tutor Group student will receive wrist bands after the roll marking then move to celebrate Mass in the Hall. Students who do not have a wrist band will be unable to access the rides.
Students will need to provide their own food for recess; however a free BBQ will be provided for students and staff at lunch. There will also be other opportunities for students to purchase food and drink via the stalls and food trucks onsite.
Please note, the cafe will NOT be operating on this day.
Marist-Sion’s Got Talent will be back for another year and following this, students will be able to access the carnival like atmosphere on the back oval, enjoying the great vibes, rides, food and activities throughout the afternoon.
Students will not be able to come and go from the premises as per a normal school day. The day will conclude at 3.20pm as normal after we have had time to mark the rolls and clean-up of course!
Please look out for promotional material regarding Heritage Day Coming soon.
