Year 2 News
Well, what a week we have had in Year 2!
Where we are in place and time:
We have been having so much fun finishing the Term and the Unit of Inquiry with some wonderful activities, lessons and thinking.
The highlight was our Migration Day. The Year 2s looked fabulous dressed in old fashioned clothes, or clothes which represented their heritage, be that cultural dress, or something else which represented different countries of origin. A recent maths lesson highlighted to us the many and varied countries we originated from and it was fun to reflect on this on Migration Day.
We started the day excited and ready for our trip. We made sure we all had our passports and our personalised suitcases, packed with five of our most important items.
2A Migration
2A, 2B and 2C all set off in different directions, each class searching for a better place to live. We considered the oval, but it seemed too barren, we weren’t sure that any food would grow here. We visited the Year 3s, but they let us know how remote their classrooms were, so we left. We considered the Prep classrooms, but the locals seemed a little wild! Finally, we went up to the BER. We liked the look of the Year 5 classrooms, but we were assured that it was difficult to find work and that all the jobs were taken.
2B Migration
Next, we had to make our way through customs. We were a little overwhelmed by the strictness of security and we all felt a little nervous. Our bags were checked and we were scanned. The lucky ones went straight through to get their passports stamped. However, some of us had unexpected contraband found in our suitcases. Some children had extra passports, large amounts of money and food. Some Year 2 students were also accused of trying to bring live pets into the country. After some questioning, fortunately, we all had out passports stamped and were welcomed into Australia!
We made our final trip and decided to settle in one of the alternate Year 2 classrooms. Everyone felt happy to have made their journey and we then loved sharing and hearing about the special items students decided to bring in their suitcases. Special items ranged from medals the children were proud to have received, to family photographs to special soft toys many of the students had had since they were babies.
2C Migration
It was a wonderful day and gave the students an insight into what it might feel like to pack everything up and move their lives across the world. We thank the office staff and principals who did an absolutely amazing job of replicating border security!
Pen Pals
Since the start of the year, we have been corresponding, via letters, with Year 2 students from Beaumaris Primary School.
We have learnt about how a letter is set out and how to answer and pose questions in order to to help the Year 2s get to know their pen pals.
Cha cha slide dance for Year 2 Black Rock Pen Pals
We were happy to receive a bookmark from our pen pals and had fun showing them our Year 2 space. We then went on a tour around the school, we had a play and we got to visit the amazing Year 4 Showcase with our pen pals.
We loved playing on our school equipment, playing ball games and skipping as we chatted and got to know our pen pals more. We reflected on the fact that we might go to high school with many of these students and some of us already knew some BPS students through out of school activities.
We had a wonderful morning, and we are excited to go and visit them at their school one day soon!
