Our school leaders have been participating in the Junior Council program which is run by Hobson's Bay council. Junior Council is an interactive program that aims to familiarise school children with the responsibilities and functions of local government, and the range of community services offered by their local Council. Junior Council meetings are adapted from actual Council meetings, and provide young people of Hobsons Bay with the opportunity to raise issues of interest or concern, in a formal Council setting which is also attended by our mayor, Cr Matt Tyler.
So far both Audrey Dearnaley and Oliver Nguyen have been our Junior Councillor representatives. Audrey spoke to the council about the issue of dogs being off leash in local Newport parks where they are supposed to be on-lead and the effects that this has on our community. Oliver spoke about the number of families with young children in Newport and introduced the idea of council building a gated playground tailored to toddlers for our community to use and enjoy. Both Oliver and Audrey have done a wonderful job representing our school and the Newport community. I know that Eliza and Archer, who will be presenting at future council meetings, are eager to also address council with their concerns and ideas.
