Year 7 Saltbush Visit

Our Year 7 students traveled to Saltbush at Balnarring Beach, to undertake community service, maintenance, and upkeep of accommodation and the property.

Saltbush is a community accommodation that is run by Kildare Ministries and the Presentation Sisters for those within the community experiencing financial hardship, distress, or conflict in their lives.

The Year 7 students listened to Sister Joan of the Presentation Sisters give an insightful history of the creation, transformation, and significance of Saltbush. Students engaged with Sister Joan to understand the important and positive ecological and well-being impact that Saltbush has on the most vulnerable members of the community.

The Year 7 students enthusiastically undertook some tasks including making hampers of food, organising bookshelves and games, gardening, and upkeep of accommodation.

As the first Killester group to visit Saltbush, our Year 7 students were very excited to 'adopt a house' that will continue to be worked on by Killester students for many years to come.

We look forward to visiting Saltbush again soon!

Killester College Energy Breakthrough Team

The Killester College Energy Breakthrough Team better known as KCEB, is one of the few STEM clubs that Killester runs open to all students from years 7 to 12. Energy Breakthrough is a program that allows students to learn new skills from Science and Engineering to fitness and teamwork. Participating in two events this year, the students must train and ride to enhance their performance.

Luckily enough this year, we have been fortunate enough to find a training centre that enables our student riders to be given an opportunity to ride to their full potential and get a feel of racing with each other before having to enter the upcoming events. In these last four weeks of Term 2, the team has been training at Edithvale Velodrome practising their skills and timing their speeds. Through these 4 weeks not only have the training sessions enabled us to have a chance to have a proper ride around and improve on our techniques but also allowed us to build better teamwork and communication skills, developing new friendships and memories with all their club members regardless of age or year level.

Through these training sessions, we have also found talented young people with incredible speeds of riding and an average time of under one minute per 400-metre lap.

These students included:

Year 9: Cyrella, Thycia, Celine, and Sophia

Year 10: Vivienne, Akyra, Mia, and Vanessa

Year 11: Jackie and Kelly

Even though KCEB is a student-based program, teacher involvement is also greatly encouraged especially during our upcoming Sandown race event in July which is open to all ages, therefore our teachers must also have an opportunity to train as well. Our two team leader teachers Mr Cherrington rode an incredible average of only 43 seconds while Mr Blanchfield rode a speedy average of 45 seconds.

Year 7 Visual Art

Our talented Year 7 artists have been hard at work researching a bird of their own choice to first sketch in graphite and then turn into a ceramic masterpiece with clay.

The students have made the most incredible pieces with everything from Kookaburras to Peacocks. They are to be congratulated for their amazing creations currently on display in the Killester Reception.

They will also be on display during the Art/Technology exhibition on Friday 18th October.

International Netball Competition

Over the winter holidays, nineteen students participated in the International Netball Competition with the support and guidance of eleven staff members.

Our students had a great time, they were able to play teams from Malaysia, Indonesia, and New Zealand as well as teams from interstate. It was a tough competition as we played against international teams and our students learnt so much from this experience.

Congratulations to our two teams, you all played so well and demonstrated upstanding sportsmanship. You make Killester College so proud!

💙 The juniors finished 16th

💛 The seniors finished 23rd

A huge thank you especially to Ms Camilleri, Miss Valeri and Miss Broomhall who coached the two teams over the four days of the holidays.

Please join me in also thanking the following staff members who attended on the holidays to support our beautiful students: Ms Sadler, Mr Brodie, Mr Pearce, Ms Neville, Ms Brunt, Ms Edwards and Ms Collins 🫶

Careers Expo

Our Senior Pathways Team welcomed a wide range of exhibitors so that our students could explore future study options. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to gather information, ask questions, and learn about the countless pathways post-high school.

It is always an exciting and inspiring experience for our students and we would like to extend our thanks to the TAFE and Universities who came to the college and diligently answered all our students' questions.

Christmas in July

Last Friday we surprised our staff with a Christmas in July themed morning tea! There were bons bons, tinsel, and delicious red velvet cupcakes for all to enjoy.

It was such a fun and wonderful way to bring our staff together to celebrate the first week of term three!
