Year Eight

Year 8 Physical Education

The Year 8 Students in Physical Education have transitioned remarkably well. Students have started Term 2 by completing their athletics trials in High Jump and Triple Jump. The aim in High Jump is for them to develop their take off technique, clearance over the bar and landing. High Jump requires a combination of speed, strength and coordination and the students have used their best efforts to improve their skills. The aim for students in Triple Jump is to focus on mastering the technique, including the hop, step and jump phases. The students are also working on the distance jumped with each attempt, aiming for their personal best.

This term students will be exploring contact team sports such as "Rugby". They will be focusing on passing, kicking and defence strategies. Rugby emphasises team work, communication and cooperation. The students will practise working together to move the ball up the field as well as practising their defending strategies against the opposing team.

Year 8 Health

The students have completed their unit on “The Health Benefits of Physical Activity”. Their assessment task was a case study focusing on “Influencing Healthier Travel in our local communities”. The students created excellent Powerpoint and Canva presentations detailing how we could implement effective bike programs to encourage physical activity in our local communities.

In Term Two we will be learning about “Body Systems”. It will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of how our bodies function, which is essential for maintaining good health. This unit will also help students appreciate the interconnectedness of different organs and systems.

Year 8 Science

Welcome back, to another exciting term at Saltwater!

Last term, our students delved deep into the fascinating realm of biology, exploring the intricate structures of different cell types through microscopic observations. It was a journey of discovery as they uncovered the wonders of cellular life.

This term, the biology journey continues as we start to explore plant and animal body systems. Students will delve into the inner workings of these systems, learning how they function and interact with one another. From the process of digestion in the digestive system to the efficient work of the respiratory system, there's a world of knowledge waiting to be uncovered.

In addition to studying body systems, students will also be delving into the study of plant and animal reproduction. From pollination to fertilization, they will gain a deeper understanding of the processes that drive life itself.

As we embark on this new chapter, let's approach it with curiosity, enthusiasm, and a thirst for knowledge. Together, let's make this term a journey of discovery and growth.

Here's to an exciting and enriching Term 2 ahead!

Year 8 English

Welcome back to Term 2! This term in Year 8 English, students are studying Information Reports

Last week, students were re-introduced to the structure of an Information Report and reviewed a mentor text to provide context for their learning. To foster critical and creative thinking, students had the opportunity to identify what went well in the Information Report mentor text, and suggested improvements for how the writing could be further enhanced. Students then applied their own feedback and enacted the suggested improvements, demonstrating their understanding of how feedback is an important part of the writing process.

Later this term, students will be writing their own Information Reports, and we look forward to reading them!
