Year One

2024

Dear Year One Community,

Welcome to our latest edition of the Year One school newsletter, where we highlight the fantastic progress and achievements of our young learners.

In the realm of Reading, our students have been delving into the wonderful world of reading by making meaningful text-to-self, text-to-text and text-to-world connections. Through these connections, our budding readers are enhancing their comprehension skills and fostering a deeper appreciation for literature. It's heartening to see them draw parallels between their own experiences and those of the characters they encounter in stories, nurturing empathy and understanding along the way.

In their writing endeavours, our Year One students have been mastering the art of recounting experiences using the 5Ws - Who, What, Where, When, and Why. By incorporating these essential elements, they are honing their skills and learning to structure their writing clearly and coherently. From exciting trips to family gatherings, our young writers are enthusiastically sharing their adventures while developing their writing skills.

Turning our attention to Mathematics, our students have been exploring number representation using number lines. Through hands-on activities and engaging lessons, they are grasping the concept of numerical order and value with confidence. By visually plotting numbers on a number line, they are not only strengthening their understanding of basic arithmetic but also laying the groundwork for more complex mathematical concepts in the future.

During Inquiry, students recently embarked on a thought-provoking journey centred around understanding and respecting other people's perspectives. Through engaging activities like the human knot and building the tallest tower, they explored the dynamics of teamwork and communication. In spirited discussions, they pondered what makes a good relationship and how empathy is crucial in understanding diverse viewpoints. As we introduce the Central Idea of 'Understanding and respecting other people's perspectives help us to develop empathy', our students are poised to embark on a journey of discovery and understanding.

As educators, we are immensely proud of the dedication and enthusiasm demonstrated by our Year One students. Their eagerness to learn and willingness to embrace new challenges is truly commendable, and we look forward to witnessing their continued growth and success throughout the year.

Thank you for your ongoing support in nurturing the academic and personal development of our young learners. Together, we can empower them to reach their full potential and become lifelong learners.
