Ag Studies

Term 1 continues to be a busy and highly productive term for Ag Studies students.

Autumn is our peek harvesting time and we have devoted many hours to the harvesting and processing of tomatoes, potatoes, melons and others.  So far we have processed our Roma tomato crop into 40 bottles of passata. Students have not only learned about growing this crop, but have also learned about value adding and vertical integration in agriculture.  Today we added to our list of value adding options by producing two large batches of semi-dried tomatoes.  Last week we harvested and shared enough watermelon and cantaloupe for the entire school. This was most welcome on a warm Friday afternoon!

The recently completed rotating compost bins are now in full use and are taking all of our compostable waste. The bins are located in a highly visible area and students are able to see our composting initiative at work. Having the bins visible is important in reinforcing the importance of managing waste in an environmentally sustainable manner.
