Learning Support

2024 in the Learning Lounge has been off to a flying start with all of our titchy little snapperwhippers using their best butterfly nets to catch the golden phizzwizards (beautiful dreams) that must have been floating around in the air like little wispy-misty bubbles. These dreams are just the beginning for our chidlers with not a trogglehumper (terrible nightmare) in sight!

After all of that dream catching, we have been learning how to 'sound swap' and our Year Twos are getting so good at being detectives and tracking those changes. We have also been busy segmenting and blending words that contain the phonemes that we have been studying. Nothing gets by us though because we all know how important it is to carefully "say the sounds and read/write the words". Our MacqLit kiddos have been hard at work on their decoding and fluency skills and have been rising to every challenge. There is also always time for a game at the end of the week- learning is so much fun in the Learning Lounge!

We have also had some super exciting news with our Maths intervention program starting in our junior primary classrooms. In these lessons we work on targeted math skills and language at the same time while using concrete materials to help consolidate those understandings. How lucky we are at St Helenas!

Jokes of the week:

Year 6 Brolgas and Emus

Wow, we have had such a busy start to the school year; so much so we are almost at the end of our first term together. These last 8 weeks have been a world of fun! We been focused on diving in deeper to a lot of different subjects and working out what it’s like to be in Year 6.

We began the term by creating out own Acknowledgement of Country. Each class used lots of resources and had great discussions about why they are so important. Together we created own, look at how they turned out. Recently, we have been reading the novel Black Cockatoo by Carl Merrison and Hakea Hustler. This has helped us to gain an understanding of Aboriginal culture and history. We have all found the book very interesting to read and the class discussions based about the topics have been great as we try to get inside the mid of the main character Mia and her brother Jy.

In writing our focus has been on Information Reports, we began the term by looking at a text based on Narnia. We enjoyed drawing the setting of Narnia and describing how it sounds and how it looks from the text. We are now transferring our skills to real life topics as we delve into writing report of our chosen Asian Countries.

In Hass we have learned about our Carbon Footprint and how to be sustainable and how to reduce it. We are gaining lots of background knowledge as we work towards creating out or food truck business next term. In Religion we have learned about many different Christian Vocations, different parables and the Kingdom of God.

We have been trying out so many new things in Maths, from working in groups to solve investigations to standing up and doing our work on the windows (check out our photos)!

This term we have also had our assembly, as it was on International Women’s Day, we based it on the many inspiration women in our lives. We are also excited to get stuck into participating more within our chosen leadership Ministries for 2024.

With only a week left of the term and all this learning under our belts, it’s time for a break, but beforehand we are leading the school in the Stations of the Cross for our Holy Week Liturgies next week.
