FIRST LEGO League Challenge
A group of SMC STEM enthusiasts may have found the missing link to unlocking ancient mysteries – with LEGO!
On Saturday 8 November, the Year 6 and 7 students joined 14 teams from across Tasmania to compete in the FIRST LEGO League Challenge, hosted by Devil Robotics at SMC.
This year’s theme, 'Unearthed', invites participants to uncover the secrets of ancient civilisations through STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) by engaging in robotics, coding and design engineering.
The challenge encourages teamwork, creativity and real-world problem solving, with each team tasked with developing an innovation project and programming LEGO robots to complete a series of themed missions.
The St Mary’s team, 'ANTILAG', developed 'ARCHY-SEE-OLOGY', a dual-capability robot featuring solar charging, LiDAR technology, and an NFC-enabled lockbox for artefact protection.
After a busy day of judging, robot games and teamwork, our students received the Core Values Award for their enthusiasm, professionalism and collaboration, as well as the Peer Award, voted by other teams, recognising their inclusivity, teamwork and innovation.
Congratulations and well done to the team and thank you to our sensational STEM educators for inspiring innovation and excellence in action at St Mary's College.
Remembrance Day Service | Honouring those who served
On Tuesday 11 November, we gathered as a College to honour those who have served our country with courage and sacrifice.
Held in the Nagle Centre, our Remembrance Service was a poignant reminder of the debt we owe to the heroes who have fought to protect our freedoms.
Our service was marked by the haunting sound of The Last Post, played by Orlaithe Dhue (Year 9) and Mr Jack Machin.
Thank you to all who participated in making this Assembly and Service a meaningful and respectful tribute.
We will remember them. Lest we forget.
Almighty and eternal God, we remember those who gave their lives in wars, conflicts and peace-keeping operations. Grant them rest, and comfort all who grieve. May their sacrifice inspire us to live in peace, to pursue justice and to serve others with humility.
Staff achievement
Congratulations to Secondary Teacher, Ms Georgina Harris, who has recently completed her Highly Accomplished Lead Teacher (HALT) certification.
The HALT certification celebrates teachers who go above and beyond, showcasing exceptional teaching and leadership skills aligned with the Australian Professional Standards for Teaching.
Ms Harris was acknowledged by the Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, pictured below, and other Tasmanian educational leaders and peers at the recent Australian Council for Education Leaders breakfast.
