STUDENT  LEARNING

Celebrations of learning at Lucas Primary School

Foundation in Term 4

The Foundation students have hit the ground running this term with lots of excitement and energy for learning including our swimming program! We have begun exploring our new Integrated Studies unit, ‘Physical Science’, where students have been busy experimenting, making predictions, and discovering how things move, push, and pull.

In Reading, our students have been continuing to build their skills to become confident and successful readers by practising strategies that help them read with fluency and understanding. In Writing, the children have been creating wonderful narratives, using their imagination to develop interesting characters and storylines.

Meanwhile, in Numeracy, we have launched our new Launch, Explore and Summarise model, which encourages students to think deeply about mathematical concepts. Each week, the children apply what they’ve learned by solving a real-life worded problem making their maths learning meaningful and fun!

We have an exciting term planned!

Year 3/4 in Term 4

Reading:

In Reading this term, students have also investigated different comprehension skills such as inferring, searching for and using information and the author's purpose/morale, through a range of rich mentor texts such as ‘Stay for Dinner’, ‘The Patchwork Bike’ and ‘Ziba Came on a Boat’. Students focused on the same book throughout a week and created a deeper understanding of the text and its concepts.

Writing:

Students have been working on upskilling their narrative writing skills by incorporating figurative language such as similes, alliteration, onomatopoeia and personification to enhance their descriptions and engage the reader. Students worked through all stages of the writing process to plan, draft, edit, revise and publish their texts

Numeracy:

We have learnt to collect, represent and analyse data. Students have organised and collected data using tally marks, and created various graphs, including column graphs, bar graphs, and pie charts. Students interpreted the information displayed in these graphs to make comparisons, identify trends and draw conclusions. They also discussed how data can be represented in different ways to tell a story or answer specific questions. They also experimented with creating charts on Excel/Sheets and with skittles!

Students have also explored number patterns, made connections between skip counting and multiplication.

Integrated Studies:

This Term for Integrated Studies, students have begun exploring different types of Forces including gravity, push and pull, friction and magnetism.

Swimming:

Over the past few weeks all the Year 3/4 Classes have participated in the Swimming Program at Shayne Reese. The students loved practising their skills as well as learning new ones. A highlight of the program would have to be the water safety day where students participate in survival scenarios and finish off with fun rotations to celebrate their swimming success!
