In Our Classrooms

Year 6 Debating

Our Year Six students have been getting right into the spirit of debating this term, and it’s been so fantastic to see! They’ve worked hard to develop their persuasive language, structure their arguments, and speak with confidence in front of their peers. Students drafted arguments about topics they feel passionate about, harnessing the power of all their persuasive devices to convince their audience.

To make the experience even more engaging (and a lot of fun), students dressed up to suit their debate topics, we saw lots of suits and ties, moustaches, and everything in between. It’s been a great way to bring some creativity and personality into the classroom, and it’s clear that dressing the part has helped boost their confidence and sense of ownership over their presentations. We’ve been so impressed with the way they’ve supported each other, taken on feedback, and stepped up to the challenge.

Year 3 Wanyara Art Incursion

Our Year 3 students recently participated in the Wanyara Art Incursion as part of their Term 2 Curiosity Unit, 'We Remember', which explores Aboriginal and Australian history.

During the session, students engaged collaboratively with Aboriginal art practices and explored how art is used for cultural expression and storytelling. Each student created a unique art piece that reflected their own personal story.

It was a meaningful and creative experience, with students gaining valuable insights they will carry into their ongoing Curiosity inquiry.

Chess Club

It has been great to see an increase in the number of students attending Chess club each Monday at lunchtime with Ms O'Hallloran.  Students are invited to join the club in the learning lab and enjoy a game of chess or checkers with a friend.  Many of our students are learning more and more about the rules of how to play each week and enjoying the opportunity to engage in something different at lunchtime.

Year 3 Italian

In Italian, the Year 3 students were engaged in playing a reading/memory game that focused on stationery found in the Italian classroom. Students first needed to match the picture of the object to their Italian name, then match the English name to the Italian one. This is the initial step for students to start reading, recognising and using these words in class. A subsequent Seesaw activity was used for students to apply the vocabulary learned and manipulate it to change the words from singular to plural.

Personal Enrichment Program (PEP)

As part of our Personal Enrichment Program (PEP), Hazel Glen College will continue to implement the Respectful Relationships curriculum. For the remainder of the term, all students in the Primary Years will focus on the topic of Stress Management.

This important area of the curriculum supports students in building emotional awareness and resilience by helping them recognise the signs of stress in themselves and others. Throughout these lessons, students will explore a range of practical strategies for managing stress in healthy ways, such as using positive self-talk, problem-solving, and identifying trusted adults they can turn to for support.

We believe these skills are essential in helping our students navigate challenges both inside and outside the classroom, promoting well-being and contributing to a positive school environment.

Year 6 Interschool Sports

Well done to all teams who participated in interschool sports over the past two weeks. We are very proud of the ongoing sportsmanship shown by our students, which truly reflects the values of our College. Unfortunately, Whittlesea had to forfeit in Week 7 so some of our teams used the round to play an internal round.

A massive thank you to Mr Gibson and our incredible parent volunteers - Jenelle, Cath, Beti, Justin and Michelle who made the day possible. Thank you for coaching, transporting students and cheering. We truly couldn’t have done it without you!
