Girls Football Gala Day: By Alex I
We arrived at Kings Park feeling excited, energised and soon, we had dominated all of our games and finished on top, ready for the semi-finals.
The first semi-final game was a little bit harder, but we still ended victorious– getting us into the second semi-final game.
We were feeling good but we soon realised this team wouldn’t be so easy to beat and unfortunately they scored a goal in the last 10 seconds and we would no longer qualify for the grand final.
The whole team was feeling disappointed but we still fought for third place and ended in fourth place overall. Everyone put in their best efforts but Milla, Lulu and Lucy stood out the most, ensuring our place as fourth in the division.
Learning in Action
Word Work: By Alex I
In Word Work we have been learning how to use and spell pull/pulse words and we have also been focussing on the 211 Rule. The 211 Rule is to help us understand when to double the last letter when adding a suffix. For an example: propel+ing. Will we need to add a vowel suffix? Yes, because 'ing' begins with an 'i'. The next rule is does the base word have two syllables? Yes, 'pro-pel'. Is the second syllable stressed? 'pro-PEL' so, yes. Is there a vowel in the second syllable? Yes! Finally, is there a consonant following the vowel? Yes, so we have to double the L. Propelling.

Us Mob
In grade 6, we’ve been reading Us Mob, a book all about a young Luritja girl called Ruby who is curious about why her and her teacher, Mr Duncan’s cultures are so at odds with each other. In the classroom we’ve been working hard with the work to do with this text. Ruby and her family, the mob, have their own language, Luritja, which they speak occasionally in the book. At the end of each lesson we do a booklet task where we learn about some vocabulary words that were in the book that we don't know.
Writing
In grade 6 we’ve been doing lots of work to do with our writing. Specifically with our simple, compound, and complex sentences. A simple sentence is a sentence with only one clause, for example: I walked my dog in the park. A compound sentence is a sentence with more than one subject, for example: I’m busy now, but we’ll talk later. A complex sentence is a sentence with one independent clause and at least one dependent clause, for example: I called my friend after school because I was bored.
The Referendum
In class we’ve been learning about the 1967 referendum and how it affected the First Nations Australians. We’ve been collecting information for our factual recount report. For e.g. the 1967 referendum was one of the most successful in Australia's history. We’ve been learning about life before, events leading up, and life after the referendum. We’ve all been interested learning about the referendum that gave the First Nations Australians the right to vote.
Vocabulary
In Us Mob, we’ve been learning about new words that are in the book. Some of the words are:
Wretched means poor, miserable, sad or pitiful.
Gritty means consisting of / or containing little stony particles, dirt or sand.
Sheepish means scared or embarrassed.
Those are only some of the words that we’ve been learning about.

Moving forward the Grade 6s will be continuing the text Us Mob and unpacking the novel in sentence level and text level writing.
Mathematics: By Roman Di
In grade 6, we have been working on graphs and improving our multiplication skills. Two weeks ago the grade 6s were working on a side by side column graph. We did this by first choosing an interesting topic to collect data. The data that we created then had to be compared into two sections to be represented on the graph. The easiest way I decided to do this was to compare girls and boys and their favourite sports. Every graph needed to include a heading, X and Y axis, labels and a key to indicate the data.
The past couple of weeks the grade 6’s have been working hard on learning multiplication. We have been focussing on the box model and vertical algorithms to solve equations. Each student has had specific work to do on their personalised goal. We completed our ‘prove it’ sheets this week to report on our progress.

Moving forward in grade 6 we will have a focus on division. This week every Grade 6 student completed a pre-test on division to make sure they are put in the correct group for their goals lessons that start in week 6.

Green Team News:
Under the guidance of Mrs Stokol and Mrs Alexander, the Green Team met for the first time this week. What a meeting it was! All up across years 3-5 we have close to 50 very excited and passionate students wanting to do their part. Whether it’s helping to keep the school free of rubbish, looking after and developing the plants gardens, educating the school community about sustainability, there was a buzz in the air as students shared their ideas and signed up for roles. A new initiative we’ve introduced this term is the collection of 10c containers. The special lunch day during last term raised $21. We look forward to saving these containers on a daily basis from going to landfill and turning them into cash. Money raised will be invested back into Green Team initiatives.
Involvement in the Green Team is all inclusive. It’s not too late for your child to get involved should they wish.
