Learning in Action

Literacy

This fortnight, students completed analysing the picture story book All Around Australia, learning many related vocabulary words including borrowed, bungle, rare, collect and the challenge words, expedition and demonstration. The Grade 3s also continued to work on a conclusion paragraph for their explanation text on waterfalls, and completed their pieces by revising and editing their work. The students revised common and proper nouns, and were introduced to the different types of verbs: doing, thinking, saying, feeling, being and having. In Word Work, students completed the unit on homophones.

In the upcoming fortnight, students will begin analysing a new picture story book, Finding Our Heart by Thomas Mayo. Students will read and respond to the text by answering questions, having class discussions, sharing and building on ideas to identify the main idea in the text. Students will continue to explore and use new vocabulary they read within the text. Our grammar lessons will focus on sentence expansion where students develop sentences by adding details for who, when, where and why. In Word Work, the Grade 3s will be focussing on the pattern - wa wha war whar.

Maths

This fortnight, the Grade 3s have been exploring the ‘=’ sign and understanding that it means ‘the same as,’ with numbers and symbols on either side equalling the same value, regardless of which side they are on. They have practised balancing equations by finding the total. Students also revised ‘fact families,’ exploring the relationship between addition and subtraction and how they can use known parts or the total to help them work out missing numbers in an equation. Students continued working towards their individual addition goals by learning specific strategies to help them solve addition problems.

In the applied sessions, students  continued to work on their rich learning task about location by reviewing pictures taken of the prep playground from the previous week. As a class, they brainstormed key areas of the playground and then individually created legends to represent these important parts. They then began to map out the playground from a bird’s eye view, focusing on correct sizing and positioning of the equipment. Finally, they created questions about their map using positional language, for their partner to answer, and then swapped maps.

Students will begin learning about subtraction, exploring that subtraction is taking parts away from a total, finding an unknown part or finding the difference between two numbers. Students will learn different strategies they can use to solve subtraction problems. In our applied lessons, the Grade 3s will complete their location unit and finalise their maps of the school playground. Following this unit, they will begin to learn about area and mass.

Wellbeing

Students have further developed their understanding of emotions and related them to different situations that can occur in the school day. Classes had big discussions around these emotions and how we may feel different emotions compared to our friends even in the same situation, and that’s okay. Students have explored friendship goals and after reading over a Friendology list of friendship goals and discussing them, they have each chosen one that they would like to focus on and track over the coming weeks. Some of these goals include:

  • Make a new friend by finding something in common
  • Remember friendships change and that’s okay
  • Use the friend-o-meter quiz to help me with my friendships
  • If someone is Mean-on-Purpose, I say my Quick Comeback, walk away and report it to an adult
  • Be a good listener when someone is sharing their stories

Students will develop their communication skills and friendship building skills through the strategy ‘Ask and Pass’. They will practise asking a friend a question, with their friend responding and asking a follow up question back to their friend. During 4 Rs, students will begin the topic, Personal Strengths by looking at building team strengths through cooperative games such as those played in Grade 3 sport.

Updates from around the school

Green Team News:

Under the guidance of Mrs Stokol and Mrs Alexander, the Green Team met for the first time this week. What a meeting it was! All up across years 3-5 we have close to 50 very excited and passionate students wanting to do their part. Whether it’s helping to keep the school free of rubbish, looking after and developing the plants gardens, educating the school community about sustainability, there was a buzz in the air as students shared their ideas and signed up for roles. A new initiative we’ve introduced this term is the collection of 10c containers. The special lunch day during last term raised $21. We look forward to saving these containers on a daily basis from going to landfill and turning them into cash. Money raised will be invested back into Green Team initiatives.

Involvement in the Green Team is all inclusive. It’s not too late for your child to get involved should they wish.

If you have any questions or would like to arrange a meeting with your child’s teacher, please don’t hesitate to get in touch via Compass at any point during the year.

Have a wonderful weekend.
