Year 1 News

From Joey, Year 1 Teacher

Welcome Back

We are thrilled to welcome our students back, where they eagerly shared their holiday experiences and started the new term on a positive note. From the very first day, students settled smoothly into their routines and learning. We began the day with our morning circle, reconnecting with each other and our learning spaces. Students dived straight into literacy with the Phonics Plus program, strengthened their number sense and fact fluency through engaging Maths games, and participated enthusiastically in a range of specialist programs. It has been an amazing first week back!

ANZAC Day

As ANZAC Day approached, students explored the origins and significance of this important day of commemoration. They learned about the bravery and sacrifices made by Australian soldiers and their families in shaping our country. To honour these contributions, students created their own poppies as a symbol of respect and remembrance.

Looking Ahead

Literacy

This term in Literacy, we will continue to explore a range of genres in Reading and Writing. In Phonics Plus, students will begin learning vowel digraphs and be introduced to split vowels. They will participate in reading conferences to enhance their decoding fluency and reading comprehension. In writing conferences, students will work on individual goals such as sentence fluency, conventions, and text organisation, while collaborating with teachers and learning from their peers’ ideas.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, students will build on their counting and place value knowledge as they explore operations, focusing on addition and subtraction. These skills will be integrated with basic money transactions, and students will practise part-part-whole fluency for numbers 3 to 10. Later in the term, we will introduce concepts of multiplicative thinking, sharing, and grouping to further develop their mathematical understanding.

Humanities

In our Humanities program, students will embark on a journey to learn about maps, continents, and countries. They will explore and inquire into different topics, developing an understanding of the human and physical characteristics of geographical elements around the world.
