Literacy News - Term 2 - Week 2
In Foundation and Year 1, some of the students have been participating in small group literacy sessions to help develop their reading and comprehension skills. The small group sessions are run during class literacy times and follow the same Little Learners Love Literacy reading program that is being taught in the classroom. In each session, the students are practising saying letters and sounds and learning how to segment and blend sounds together to read words in stories and information texts.
The students have also been having fun learning to read by singing songs, practising their handwriting and playing games such as Bingo and word games. These activities help the children remember the letters and sounds so that they can read on their own – it also helps to build their confidence and love of books and reading! Here is a link to a song that the children have been singing in the sessions about Milo Monkey, to learn the letter ‘m’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yH5JRWhMA28
Foundation students have been revising the letters and sounds that they learnt in Term 1 and are reading texts that help them practise all these letters and sounds. This term, the students will be introduced to a new set of letters and sounds as well as reading and writing using these new focus sounds. The students are always so excited when a new letter and sound is introduced in the sessions, and they have fun trying to guess which one it is!
Year 1 students have also been revising all the letters and sounds and are really developing more confidence with their reading, in particular, they are practising to read a text by using strategies such as segmenting and blending. The students are also applying their reading skills to their writing and spelling of words and having lots of opportunities to read aloud in the small group.
To support your child’s reading at home – you can read a storybook with them every day. Ask your child questions about the story, characters and setting. Point to the words and pictures as you read, use different voices to show the different characters and mood of the story! Afterwards, talk about the story and ask your child if they can retell the story to you by asking them what happened in the beginning, middle and end of the story. Most of all - have fun reading with your child – make it an enjoyable routine that you share with them every day!
