5/6 Classroom News

5/6 News

We have been super busy with a lot happening in the Grade 5/6 area. Our students are enjoying the many sporting and community events afforded to them and we are very proud of how they represent themself and our school while out in the community. We encourage our families to keep an eye on Compass for the many notifications sent out regarding payment and permission for students to attend these events. We give many reminders to students leading up to events but if permission is not given by the day of the event, students will unfortunately not attend.

GRADE 6 HIGHSCHOOL PREFERENCE

It is that exciting time of the year again where we are asking our Grade 6 families to indicate which high school they are thinking they will be sending their child to next year. This is to support us in the process of co-ordinating the transition and to liaise with each high school. Please know that families are not locked into this decision and can change their mind at any time but a preference at this stage is still very valuable. If families do change your preference throughout the year, please let your classroom teacher or the school know asap so we can continue to help support your child with this process. If our families could call into the school or email classroom teachers back with the preference for your child now, that would be greatly appreciated. We have also sent home today the Year 6 to 7 Placement Information Pack to Parents and Carers with all of our Grade 6 students. This is a requirement from the Victorian Education Department to collect this information so we are asking our families to please fill in and return with you child as soon as possible.

Our planner may look a bit 'ruff' next week, we had a furry friend that wouldn't leave Mrs.Pridham alone during our planning time!

Echuca College Market Day

On the 5th of May 2025, the 5/6s were invited to the Echuca College where they had games and market stalls set up for us. First when we arrived, we were greeted by some of the Echuca College Year 11 Students. They took us into this big stadium with two basketball courts and one big wooden grandstand. They put us into 4 groups from the Mario movie. We played octopus, then we played this four corner soccer game where if you get a goal you get to take a cone of the top of that goal and put it on yours.

For the market we were allowed to bring $15 to spend. We had to trade it in to get tokens to use at the stalls. straight away when you walked in on the left, there was a stall where you get to ride a bike to make a milkshake for yourself. There was everything there! Milkshakes, burrito bowls, churros, donuts with icing and marshmallows on top, necklaces, guess the amount of lollies in the jar, plants, lucky dip and even ice cream! After a while, I was finally done and I was pretty much the last person there. We drove back to school and did some work till the home bell.

On Monday the 5th of May, the Grade 5/6's went to Echuca College for an excursion and when we got there, we were met by three friendly Year 11 students.  We played four corner soccer before being led over to a building where the Year 11's and 12's cooked food like brownies, donut, churros, burrito bowls, hot dogs and also milkshakes! To get that I brang $15 and cashed it in for these mini coins to spend. There was even fun games and lucky dips. It was a fun and very well ran environment.

Ghana Beat My Drum Incursion

Last Thursday, Tongala Primary School had Jonas from Ghana Beat My Drums come and play the drums for us. He brought some instruments, one was even called a talking drum from Africa and BANG! He hit the drums. Everyone had to stand up and dance. We sat back down, watched and then got back up and made a circle. We went around and around while he hit the drums. It was so loud! We then sat back down and he picked people to play some of his instruments. I was happy even though I did not get picked.

Campaspe Soccer Tournament

Mixed Team

On Friday, the 9th of May we went to Moama to play soccer. It was a 40 minute drive. Once we got there we waited 30 minutes for our game. When we got on the field, we got in our positions. I was defender, Xhander was centre, Alby was right defender, Sonny was on the bench, Chase was goalkeeper, Spencer was right mid and Scarlett was left mid. As soon as the whistle went, we kicked the ball back to Spencer and he kicked it up the field but then the other team got the ball. We lost. We went back and waited one hour for another game. Not that many people were happy about it and guess what… we lost again. After three more games we won one. At the end we went and watched the girls team who were in the finals. Tongala got half way up the field in about two seconds and scored! 1-0. The other team, didn't look too happy. The whistle blew, and again it started off as a tricky game. Both defences were really good. This time they got a goal. Now it was 1-1. Then the half time whistle blew. The other team had a pretty big frown on their faces. Half time was over, they got back on the field and in the blink of an eye somehow Tongala got another goal 2-1. Everyone was back into their positions, the whistle blew again and the other team got a good start on the ball but that wasn't going to stop Tongala. They yoinked that ball and made a run for it. The other team yoinked it back, they took a shot and… missed! You could see the look on their faces; mad because they missed that by about 00000.1 degrees. A few seconds later the game was over. Tongala was triumphant!

Girls Team

We woke up early last Friday morning, ready for the drive to Jack Eddy Oval in Moama. Who knew if we were going to make it to Swan Hill or not? We took three soccer teams; the girls team was Lana, Tippi, Tahlia, Imi, Ella, Rubi, Flo, Hanna and Maya. The boys team was Aiden, Lachie, Ricky, Lucas, Kane, Luca, Ollie, Nate, Jed, Kayden, Nugget and Billy. The mixed team was Xhander, Spencer, Chase, Alby, Ezekiel, Scarlett, Annika, Kaylee, Anika and Spencer.

We arrived while the teachers were calling out our names to make sure we were there. Us girls started walking over to our first game. While we were warming up, the opposition team was in the middle of their soccer game. The end results were a draw 0-0. The second game was in an hour so we had some time to do our thing. After that hour we were off to our next game. The end results were 0-3, us girls won and were hoping that it would get us closer to Swan Hill.

Next game we drew again 1-1. For some reason after that we didn't stop winning. We surprisingly were coming first so we had to play in the grand final. Two minutes left on the clock…the time was ticking, the score was 1-1. We knew we had to kick one more goal to win.  BOOT, KABOOM, CRASH went the ball when we kicked it. Suddenly there was a massive thud! Maya had kicked the ball from the middle of the field and… swish, it soared over the goalies head and into the goals! Everyone was shouting and celebrating. There were 30 seconds left… probably no chance for the other team to win. The final whistle blew! Everyone was super happy. We had just made it to Swan Hill! We claimed our trophy knowing soon we will be on our way to Swan Hill. That day was the best day of our lives!

Boys Team

On the 9th of May, Grade 5/6 students went to play soccer at Jack Eddy Oval in Moama. First we arrived at school at the normal time like we always do. When I arrived everyone was ready to go and I was the last person there. By the time I got my stuff everyone had already left the class and were ready to get on the bus. I didn't even get enough time to get the right size shin guards, instead I just grabbed any. We hopped on the bus and saw Rick who was driving us to soccer. When we arrived at Jack Eddy oval in Moama, there were so many schools already there. I even saw my old friend Jonty who used to go to Tongala Primary. After like 5-6 hours of playing soccer we finally finished with a total of 1 win, 5 loses and 3 ties. It was a great day

Stepping Up To Run The Assembly

On Friday the 9th of May, Cailey, Ava, Ada and Heidi were asked to run the whole school assembly because the School Captains were at the Campaspe Soccer Tournament with most of the Grade 5/6's. We were all a bit shocked at first because we had never done anything like this before but we knew it was a very good opportunity to have a go at a leadership role. We had a chat with Mr Hogan who helped us. We put new stuff on the assembly sheet and had a practice at reading all of the students of the week. It was time. Everybody started to come into the middle where we were setting up all of the chairs and bringing everything out. We were all starting to get a bit nervous as we were about to start. After assembly we were all very proud of ourselves and we were glad that we did it.

At the end we packed everything up and took back all of the chairs. Over all we were all happy and very proud that we ran the whole school assembly for our school.

Scarlett R - A Student Leader In The Spotlight

What is your leadership role? I am a Young Leader and a School Captain

What made you want to be a leader? I wanted to challenge myself to do something new and build my confidence with public speaking. I like to help everyone and want to make TPS even better.

Why does TPS need student leaders? So we can have an opportunity to lead assemblies, represent our school and talk at community events like ANZAC Day. So we have good role models for all the younger kids.

What is the best part of being a leader? Talking at community events and going to events like Young Leaders Day in Melbourne. It is also good to take a break from the classroom when getting ready for events and assemblies.

What are you proud of so far? Being able to public speak at assemblies. This was my biggest fear and now it is easy.

What is hard about being a leader? Nothing is hard about being a leader. We always have Mr Hogan's help and we work in a team. We plan and practice before events.

If you could say one thing about our school, what would it be? It is an excellent school because we have a lot of opportunities from Prep to Year 6 including excursions, camps, sporting events, community events, leadership, Hands on Learning, breaky club and buddies.
