Applied Positive Psychology (APP): Building Resilience and Leadership at The Gap SHS

At The Gap State High School, we are committed to developing “Learners Who Flourish.” Our Applied Positive Psychology (APP) Program, delivered from Year 7 to Year 11, is a unique part of our Wellbeing Framework that empowers students to build personal, social, and leadership skills through the science of positive psychology.

APP is not just an add-on; it is woven into every student’s timetable as a regular subject and is delivered through a mix of classroom and adventurous outdoor learning, including our signature Leadership Training Centre and camp experiences. The program is designed to help students understand and grow their own wellbeing, character strengths, and emotional intelligence, while also building skills like resilience, grit, teamwork, and leadership.

The APP curriculum is grounded in the internationally recognised PERMAH framework (Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Accomplishment, and Health), ensuring students learn practical strategies for managing challenges, setting and achieving goals, building healthy relationships, and finding purpose in their learning and beyond. Through hands-on activities, reflective learning, and challenges in supportive environments, students develop a growth mindset and the confidence to embrace new opportunities.

Why is this important?

Research shows that students who actively develop these capabilities are better equipped to handle life’s ups and downs, achieve academic and personal success, and contribute positively to their community. APP supports our Wellbeing Vision at TGSHS, creating a school culture where every student feels valued, included, and ready to thrive.
