Connect Program: Fostering Student Wellbeing and Success at The Gap SHS

At The Gap State High School, we are committed to nurturing "Learners Who Flourish." Our Connect Program is a core component of our Wellbeing Framework, running from Year 7 to Year 12, and is designed to build each student’s sense of belonging, resilience, emotional literacy, and positive relationships.

Connect is more than just a weekly session—it’s a dedicated time for students to develop life skills and character strengths in a supportive environment, guided by a consistent teacher who knows them well. Each lesson is shaped by principles of Gratitude, Empathy, and Mindfulness (GEM), and aligns with the Positive Psychology framework (PERMAH: Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Accomplishment, and Health). Through targeted activities, goal setting, and guest speakers, students are empowered to navigate challenges, build confidence, and develop a growth mindset.

Why does this matter?

Research shows that when students feel connected, supported, and equipped with wellbeing skills, they are more likely to achieve academic success, enjoy school, and develop resilience for life’s challenges. The Connect Program ensures every student has a trusted adult at school, learns strategies for managing stress and relationships, and develops the skills needed for a positive, fulfilling future.

This approach directly aligns with our Wellbeing Framework’s vision: that every day, every student feels a sense of belonging, can express their unique strengths, and is empowered to reach their full potential—academically, socially, and emotionally.
