Principal's Report

Welcome back to school for Term 2. It has been a strange start with a few public holidays last week, but we are well into the swing of things now.
Back Gate
We are trialling having the back gate open for both the mornings and the afternoons. The gate will be unlocked by student monitors at approximately 3.20pm each day and will remain open for the afternoon / evening. This means that the gate will be open from early morning, as it has not been locked from the night before. I ask that students (and families) do not enter the school grounds until 8.20am. If you are choosing to enter the school yard prior to 8.30am then it is expected that you are supervised by a parent / carer or adult. We have supervision in the school yard and drop off zone from 8.30am.
Students using the back gate should make their way up the ramp and off the soccer pitch when arriving, as the soccer pitch is not supervised before school.
Education Week
To celebrate Education Week we will have an open morning on Wednesday 21st May. Coincidentally this also falls on National Simultaneous Storytime.
National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 25th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.
We invite parents/carers and relatives to join us on the morning of 21st May from 9am - 10am to join us for our storytime and some literacy activities.
Riding bikes to/from school
I have been contacted by several parents about their concern for their own safety and their child’s safety when walking and riding to school. Some of our students are riding dangerously fast, swerving back/forth on the path, zooming up very close to other pedestrians etc. I am concerned this dangerous riding could lead to an injury to one or several of our students, family members or a community member. I ask parents/carers to discuss the pedestrian and passenger safety tips below.
Pedestrian and passenger safety education, as well as role modelling positive road safety behaviour, is key to primary school students becoming safe road users. Your child still needs adult supervision and assistance in the traffic environment. It is important to:
- Talk together about signs and traffic lights. Identify and discuss places where it is safe to cross the road.
- Teach your child how to cross roads using the 'stop, look, listen and think' process – stop at the kerb, look and listen for traffic and then decide whether it is safe to cross. Take the trip to school together along the safest footpaths and use safe crossing places, such as pedestrian crossings and on straight sections of road.
- Supervise your child on the way to and from school.
- Always be a good role model for your child by wearing your own seatbelt, obeying road rules, driving courteously and crossing roads safely.
- When riding, if you're near pedestrians on shared path, use your bell (or call out) to let them know you're there. Slow down when you pass.
- In Victoria, you can only ride on a footpath if you're 12 years and under or accompanying a child 12 years and under.
Behaviour Coach
We have engaged a behaviour coach from L4Life Inclusion Works® program. Emma will be working with us here at LPS on a Thursday, this will be a mixture of in-class support, individual student strategy development and staff professional learning.
It is designed to provide teachers and support staff with the knowledge and practical skills needed to create inclusive learning environments. By equipping educators and education support staff with evidence-based strategies, the program enhances outcomes for students with additional support needs and fosters greater educational success.
As well as this, we are reviewing our whole school wide behaviour expectations and processes.
School Tours
2026 Prep enrolments are now open. We have lots of tours scheduled over the coming months. Please contact the office for details and bookings.
Have a great fortnight,
Mrs Pepper
