In The Art Room

Term 4

Welcome to Term 4

This term we explore and create with all things textile related.

Foundation

We began our exploration of textiles by winding wool around cardboard looms and adding cut felt features to make our version of "Where is the Green Sheep?" Can you find the Green Sheep?

This week we started making felt caterpillars by rolling foam in to rolls and tightly covering with felt. At first they looked like sushi rolls. We then learned how to wrap and twist pipecleaners around our shapes to secure. Next week we are adding the details to make our caterpillars come to life!

Grade 1

To make our Pom Pom Gumnuts, we wound wool around cards. We had to count 3 groups of ten to make 30 winds in all. That's a lot of winding for little hands - and a lot of counting too! We twisted pipecleaners tightly around the bundle then cut the loops to allow our gumnut flowers to fluff out! We made our caps from egg cartons and threaded the stems through to secure. Next week we will be felting the leaves to complete our beautiful decorations.

Grade 2

We made sandwiches! Filled with yummy ingredients such as mayonaise, cheese, egg, tomato, sprinkles, lettuce - but made from felt, foam and glue. They look so good you could almost eat them!

Grade 3 and 4

Grade 3 and 4 artists have earned the privilege to learn how to use needles to create textile sculptures from colourful dyed sheep fleece. Needle felting is not the easiest craft to master as it requires care and patience to stay safe. We started with 3D shapes formed within cookie cutters. I am so impressed with the student's skill and ability to form their shapes with care.  This week, we have progressed to creating needle felted landscapes, exploring colour transitions and layering.

Grade 5/6

Textile Sculpture - Mini Me.Our final major artwork for the year is a Mini Me - or a sculpture based on a human form. This sculpture might be a superhero or singer or a person whom we may admire. We started by making an armature from pipecleaners then carefully modelled heads, hands and feet from our favourite Paper Magic Clay to begin personalising our sculptures. Next week we start to 'flesh out' our bodies ready to start sewing our clothes.

I look forward to sharing our Art Room news with you next time.
