From Ms Alex Dunkley, Acting Senior Years Coordinator
On Monday 14 October, our new Year 12 students boarded a bus to the misty Blue Mountains to partake in a three-day Year 12 Retreat. This year’s theme was “in 2025 we will thrive” and as such, was designed to bring the cohort together and equip them with the social and emotional skills to assist them to thrive over their HSC and final year.
Whilst on Retreat, students were involved in a number of sessions led by Reverend Sally Yabsley-Bell including exploring ideas around how we thrive, gratitude, goal setting and mental health first aid. To start and end each day, students came together for a time of reflection, singing and prayer led by Mrs Thompson and Ms Cole. During this time, we were also fortunate enough to hear personal stories of perseverance and resilience from Mr Adams, Mr Lun and Mr Bowman.
Between our formal retreat sessions, students enjoyed competing in a mini Amazing Scenic Race challenge and bushwalking led by the NSW National Parks Rangers where they were given the opportunity to take in the natural beauty and experience the rugged terrain of the Blue Mountains National Park.
Although the rain interrupted some of our evening plans, students enjoyed cosying up beside the giant fireplace for a movie night, toasting marshmallows and partaking in a very competitive teams trivia event.
Prior to departing on Wednesday, students explored Scenic World, where they rode the Scenic Railway (the world's steepest train) into Jamison Valley and adventured along trails and boardwalks beside the dinosaurs that “inhabit” that area. Students also enjoyed gliding between cliff tops and taking in the panoramic views of Katoomba Falls, the Three Sisters, Mt Solitary, and waterfalls within the Jamison Valley on the Scenic Skyway. This was definitely a highlight and a perfect way to cap off what was a wonderful time of togetherness.
KCC proved to be an exceptional venue with easily the best food ever eaten on a school camp, comfortable quarters and terrific facilities.
A special thank you to the staff that attended and facilitated the seamless running of the retreat. Your care, compassion, good humour and enthusiasm was greatly appreciated.
I look forward to seeing the 2025 cohort “THRIVE” throughout their final year at Kinross Wolaroi School.
